Fuel Scandal Uncovered: Nine Petrol Stations Shut Down for Selling Contaminated Fuel!

A major crackdown has rocked the petroleum industry! On Monday, March 31, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) dropped a bombshell, shutting down nine rogue petrol stations caught red-handed selling tainted fuel meant for export. This comes after an extensive probe spanning three months, during which 1,360 stations were put under the microscope.

The findings? Startling. While 1,347 stations played by the rules, a shocking 13 were caught violating fuel purity standards. The consequences were severe—closures, fines, and penalties slammed down hard.

According to EPRA’s damning report, nearly 6,000 tests were conducted from January to March 2025. While the majority met the required standards, the 13 defaulters (0.96%) were exposed for fueling a dirty trade.

The crackdown saw three stations locked up for peddling diesel meant for export, among them Wamuini Petrol Station in Endebess and Mungatsi Filling Station. One managed to wriggle its way back into business after coughing up Ksh111,025 in unpaid taxes.

But that’s not all—two more stations were let off the hook after shelling out Ksh306,092 and Ksh148,407 in penalties for dealing in dirty fuel. Investigators discovered high-sulfur diesel being pushed into the market, while another station was caught mixing domestic kerosene with unmarked fuel—an environmental and mechanical disaster waiting to happen.

The rogue’s gallery doesn’t end there! Miami Energy Filling Station, Wangu Filling Station, and Sofla Energy Service Station—spread across Kisumu, TransNzoia, Busia, and Kajiado counties—were forced to close their doors. The hammer also fell on Kobedo Filling Station in Homa Bay, 61 Bus Filling Station in Embakasi Central, and El Bethel Filling Station in Marsabit.

The most shocking revelation? An illegal fuel depot in Mazeras, Kilifi, was busted with diesel and contaminated kerosene stored in barrels. Authorities stormed the site, making arrests as part of an intensified war on fuel fraud.

In a stern warning to the public, EPRA urged Kenyans to stay vigilant and report any shady fuel dealings through its official hotline—active only during business hours. The agency also reminded consumers to check its website for an updated blacklist of stations that have been caught in the act.

EPRA maintains a firm grip on fuel quality, publishing the names of both compliant and non-compliant petrol stations every quarter. With the latest sting operation, one thing is clear—there’s no escape for fuel crooks!
