Court Orders Murkomen, IG Kanja to Explain Abductions

Justice Alexander Muteti issued new orders at Milimani Law Courts, instructing Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to appear on January 8 to explain the whereabouts of six Kenyans who are reportedly missing.

The six individuals include Peter Muteti, Bernard Kavuli, Gideon Kibet, Billy Mwangi, Ronny Kiplangat, and Steve Kivango.

Kanja was initially set to attend court on Tuesday following a prior order from Justice Bahati Mwamuye, but he, along with other key state officials such as the DCI and the Attorney General, failed to show up.

During the court session, the families and legal representatives of the missing individuals presented their case, with Felix Keiton leading the legal team. The lawyers accused the Inspector General and other government figures of committing serious human rights violations.

Billy Mwangi’s father tearfully shared the hardship his family has faced since his son was allegedly abducted by a group of four men.

On December 27, Murkomen, the newly appointed Interior Cabinet Secretary, ignited controversy by denying any state involvement in the disappearances. He stated that the National Police Service had informed the Ministry that no arrests had been made, nor had anyone been presented to the courts.

“As a government, we will not interfere with the independent operations of the National Police Service under the Inspector General’s leadership,” Murkomen emphasized.
