Chaos Erupts! Multimedia University Students Shut Down Magadi Road Over Tragic Death

Students from Multimedia University staged a protest along Magadi Road, causing major disruptions to traffic towards Rongai. The demonstration erupted following the tragic death of their fellow student, allegedly the victim of a hit-and-run accident.

The unrest began on Monday morning as students barricaded the road and clashed with police officers deployed to disperse them. The deceased, identified as Lameck Wambui Mwangi, was a second-year student at the university’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology. His passing was officially confirmed in a statement by the institution’s Dean of Students, David Obonyo.

“We deeply regret to announce the untimely passing of Lameck Mwangi Wambui, a second-year student who tragically lost his life in a road accident on March 9, 2025,” read part of the memo issued to students.

Mwangi, originally from Mwea West District in Kirinyaga County, is set to be laid to rest on a date that will be announced later.

The protest echoes past demonstrations by Multimedia University students, including a major one on September 17, 2024, when they accused the institution of neglecting their concerns over water shortages in hostels. Additionally, they had expressed frustration over delayed disbursement of Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) funds.

During the latest protests, the National Police Service was once again in the spotlight, facing accusations of excessive force. A viral video showed riot officers brutally beating a student with batons, sparking outrage from rights groups. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has since confirmed an investigation into the matter, though findings are yet to be released.
