Cargo Train Loses Control Causing Oil Spillage in Makueni County.

On September 18, 2024, a cargo train transporting unrefined oil derailed in the Kibwezi area of Makueni County. This caused a significant oil spill. The train was traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi. It lost control and rolled over.

This resulted in an unquantified amount of oil spilling onto the ground. Local residents quickly responded to the incident. They attempted to siphon the spilled oil into jerricans. Police intervened to secure the area and prevent contamination.

Fortunately, there were no reported casualties from the derailment. Police officers cordoned off the scene to help investigations and manage the situation.

Footage from the incident showed two train wagons leaning precariously while the rest of the train remained upright. Residents observed the scene from a distance as authorities worked to restore order and clear the wreckage.

This incident is not isolated. Kenya has experienced similar train derailments in the past. These typically involve the transportation of unprocessed oil. A notable case occurred in August 2020 when a train carrying 250,000 liters of super petrol derailed in Mombasa County.

In that instance, police also took measures to block roads and prevent public interference, ensuring safety during the emergency response.

The recurring nature of these accidents raises concerns about the safety protocols in place for transporting hazardous materials by rail. Investigations continue into the latest derailment.

The focus remains on preventing future incidents. Ensuring the safety of both the public and the environment is crucial in the wake of such accidents.
