Bee Attack at Kirinyaga Burial Sends 20 to Hospital

The peculiar event transpired as mourners were preparing to lower the remains of a 76-year-old woman into the grave.

Witnesses who shared their accounts with the media disclosed that at least 20 individuals were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Another observer mentioned that some of those who were bitten fainted while being transported to the hospital. Nonetheless, they received care and are currently recovering.

“We had accompanied a relative to this burial, and while we were concluding the service, a swarm of bees started attacking people,” recounted a witness.

“Some sought refuge in the kitchen while others rushed to the bathrooms. . . everyone looked for a hiding spot, but those who couldn’t find one suffered severe stings,” the witness continued.

A physician from Kirinyaga Hospital who verified the incident explained that the patients arrived with allergic reactions due to the stings, but the situation has since been addressed.

Shortly after, a group of rescuers, including Kirinyaga County Firefighters, reached the site, while locals lit a fire to drive away the bees before the burial could resume.

Despite the efforts, the deceased was interred at night by a small gathering of mourners. Residents asserted that they had never experienced anything like this before.

In another similarly dramatic occurrence last November, drivers were compelled to flee when bees invaded a matatu terminus in Nyeri County. The bees targeted a matatu that was about to transport passengers to Nanyuki.

As the passengers were boarding the 14-seater matatu, they noticed a swarm of bees, which immediately caused chaos inside the vehicle.

The matatu driver swiftly maneuvered the vehicle away from the road, hoping the bees would disperse; however, to everyone’s astonishment, the bees grew more aggressive, stinging several individuals.
