Anti-Abduction Protesters Arrested, Chant for Freedom Before Court Appearance

A group of protesters detained on Monday for demonstrating against abductions began singing and dancing just before their scheduled arraignment at Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday.

In a video shared on social media, the protesters could be heard chanting slogans of solidarity, declaring their resolve to “liberate Kenya.”

“United, the people can never be defeated; Gen Z united can never be defeated,” they sang.

Despite the protestors’ spirited chants, the police officers in charge of their detention appeared unfazed as the group left their cells ahead of their court appearance.

This group represents only a small portion of the Kenyans who took to the streets in several regions of the country, protesting the recent surge in abductions and forced disappearances. In Nairobi alone, seven people were abducted in December, with only one found.

During Monday’s anti-abduction protests, multiple people were arrested, including Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, who had joined the demonstrations after filing a lawsuit in the High Court against the abductions. He is currently being held at Kamukunji police station, awaiting arraignment.

The case seeks to compel the Inspector General of Police, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the Director of Public Prosecutions to account for the seven abducted youths.

The detained protesters will be presented at Milimani Law Courts, where charges are expected to be filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
