Tragedy on Bungoma-Webuye Highway—Multiple Officers Feared Dead in Horrific Crash.

A devastating traffic collision on the Bungoma-Webuye Highway has left the nation in shock, with several police officers feared dead after their patrol Land Cruiser collided head-on with a trailer.

In what eyewitnesses are calling a gruesome and heart-wrenching scene, the twisted wreckage of the police vehicle lay mangled by the roadside.

A body, believed to belong to one of the fallen officers, was seen shrouded in white cloth next to the ruins of the car, a chilling reminder of the deadly impact. The tragic incident occurred near Matisi, sparking immediate response efforts as bystanders, emergency services, and fellow officers rushed to the scene.

The vehicle, reportedly belonging to the Bungoma Railway Police Station, was severely damaged beyond recognition. However, it remains unclear whether all the officers inside were from that same unit.

Witnesses say the collision was so violent that some of the officers died instantly. While official confirmation is still pending, sources suggest that at least three bodies have already been pulled from the wreck. The rescue and recovery operation is ongoing as authorities work to clear the road and identify those involved.

Meanwhile, the country grapples with the broader issue of road safety—a crisis that continues to claim lives at an alarming rate. This tragic crash is just one of several fatal incidents involving police officers in recent weeks.

In a separate accident near Thika, Corporal James Mutunga of the Northern Corridor Transit Patrol Unit was struck and killed by a speeding vehicle while assisting with a stalled tuk-tuk.

The same vehicle mowed down three pedestrians before halting. In another horrifying episode along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway near Salgaa, a bus reportedly driven by teenagers crashed into a police vehicle, killing both officers and the reckless drivers.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the first quarter of 2025 has already seen 1,139 road fatalities—a slight drop from 1,166 during the same period last year. Pedestrians remain the most vulnerable group, accounting for 420 deaths, followed by motorcyclists (301) and passengers (189).

Just last year, a police vehicle veered into oncoming traffic on the Kericho-Sotik route, crashing into a matatu. While there were no fatalities in that incident, concerns were raised that the officer may have been under the influence.

As investigations continue into the Bungoma tragedy, the NTSA and national police have intensified road safety campaigns across Kenya, aiming to crack down on reckless driving, unroadworthy vehicles, and lax enforcement of traffic rules.

But for many, these efforts may feel too little, too late—especially for the families mourning those who swore to serve and protect.
