Shockwaves as Tiaty MP Proposes Extending President Ruto’s Term Amid Rising Tensions!

Tiaty MP William Kamket stirred debate with remarks suggesting the possibility of extending President William Ruto’s term in office. Speaking during a multi-denominational service in Kerio Valley, Elgeyo Marakwet, on Sunday, January 5, and attended by the President, Kamket took aim at critics of the administration.

The lawmaker warned that continued opposition to Ruto’s leadership could lead to calls for extending his tenure. “As residents of Baringo County, we know the value of 24 years in power and are familiar with how to achieve it,” he said, referencing the long rule of former President Daniel Moi.

Kamket implied that ongoing attempts to challenge the government might necessitate rethinking the current term limits. “If these disruptions persist, extending his tenure might become a viable consideration,” he added, while applauding Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah for expressing similar sentiments.

However, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi dismissed Kamket’s remarks, emphasizing the sanctity of the Constitution. “We respect the Constitution, which grants President Ruto a maximum of eight years in office,” Sudi asserted.

This is not the first time such a proposal has emerged from the Rift Valley. In the past, Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei floated a bill suggesting the extension of presidential term limits, further fueling discussions on the matter.
