Boda-boda riders in Kenya are facing an alarming increase in motorcycle thefts. Criminals pose as customers to execute their schemes. Kevin Mubadi is the Chairperson of the Boda Boda Association of Kenya (BAK).
He highlighted this issue during a recent event in Kisumu. He expressed concern over the growing trend of thefts that target riders. The thieves approach riders under the guise of needing transportation.
They turn on them during the ride and steal their motorcycles. The stolen motorcycles are then smuggled across borders to countries like Uganda and Tanzania.
Mubadi emphasized the importance of these motorcycles as a source of livelihood for many riders. Some of them have invested heavily in these motorcycles through loans. He called for increased security measures and community awareness programs to combat the rising thefts.
In response to the situation, the association has initiated a coordinated effort. They are working with law enforcement and private partners. Their goal is to disrupt the organized crime syndicates responsible for these thefts. This initiative aims to enhance the safety of riders and protect their assets.
The Kisumu County Commissioner, Benson Leparmorijo, assured the riders of the police’s commitment to tackling boda-boda thefts. He promised to increase police patrols in high-risk areas and improve investigative techniques to apprehend the criminals.
Additionally, he cautioned riders against engaging in reckless behavior that endanger themselves and others. The collaboration between the police and the boda-boda community is seen as crucial in addressing the theft issue effectively.
Furthermore, advancements in technology are being introduced to help combat motorcycle theft. A regional manager from a credit facility mentioned the implementation of tracking systems and security devices for motorbikes.
These systems are essential for recovering stolen bikes. They also help in preventing future incidents. This multi-faceted approach combines community engagement, law enforcement, and technology. It aims to create a safer environment for boda-boda riders in Kenya.
