The political standoff in Meru County deepens as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) escalate their offensive against Governor Kawira Mwangaza just days before a crucial High Court ruling on her impeachment.
In a fresh twist, MCAs have tabled motions seeking the removal and censure of nine County Executive Committee Members (CECMs) within the governor’s administration. Among those targeted are County Secretary Kiambi James Thambura, alongside CECMs Ibrahim Mutwiri Kirimi (Roads), Monica Kathono (Finance), Harriet Makena (Sports), and Dickson Munene (Public Service), among others.
The motions, presented on Wednesday and Thursday, further strain the county’s leadership amid an ongoing power struggle.
Governor Mwangaza is banking on a favorable ruling from the High Court, which is set to determine the validity of her impeachment challenge on Friday.
In December, Justice Bahati Mwamuye granted her temporary relief by extending conservatory orders, allowing her to retain her position while awaiting the final verdict.
“The interim conservatory orders are extended for 120 days, during which the petitioner will continue serving as Meru Governor unless a judgment is issued within that period,” Justice Mwamuye ruled.
The court rejected a Senate appeal to lift these orders, arguing that doing so would trigger a gubernatorial succession, which could become legally complex and costly if overturned later.
Mwangaza was impeached on August 21 after the Senate found her guilty of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and multiple constitutional violations.
In a related case, the Court of Appeal granted temporary relief to County Speaker Ayub Bundi, Clerk Jacob Kiari, and Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya by suspending their six-month prison sentences for contempt of court.
Their sentences have been put on hold until July 4, when the appellate court is expected to rule on several consolidated petitions linked to the ongoing legal battle.
