The rising tide of gender-based violence in Kenya has claimed another victim, Nelly Wanjiku, a 29-year-old woman from Kiambu County.

Her boyfriend poured boiling water on her face, leaving her with severe burns and traumatized. The attack occurred on August 29, 2024, during a routine evening when her partner turned violent unexpectedly.

Nelly’s partner, whose name is withheld, attacked her while she was warming food for him. He poured boiling water on her face, causing severe burns.

Nelly, in a state of shock, managed to protect her baby by urging the nanny to flee with the child. The attacker then followed her, tormenting her as she sought help.

Neighbors rushed Nelly to the hospital, where she received treatment for her burns. But, her assailant fled the scene and is now on the run.

Nelly believes the attack stemmed from her decision to focus on her career over moving in with her boyfriend. The incident has reignited the conversation on gender-based violence in Kenya, after the tragic death of Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei.

The incident highlights the prevalence of gender-based violence in Kenya. Nelly has become part of a grim statistic of women whose lives have been shattered by such violence. Nelly continues to heal physically and emotionally.

She remains haunted by the fact that her attacker is still at large. Authorities are actively searching for him. The public is urged to give any information that leads to his capture.
