Cartoonist Kibet Bull, whose real name is Gideon Kibet, has been reported as missing.
As per Kibet’s family, his brother Rony Kiplangat has also been unaccounted for since Saturday.
In an interview with Citizen Digital on Wednesday, the family mentioned that when Kiplangat went missing on Saturday, they believed he had attended church.
“We waited until evening, and when we tried to contact him, he was unreachable. We assumed he had gone to a church service at SDA Kikuyu. We sent a friend to check if he was at home. He informed us that Kiplangat was not there,” stated their sister Mercy Cherotich during a phone conversation.
Cherotich further noted that after being unable to reach Kiplangat, Kibet – the cartoonist, decided to travel from Njoro to Nairobi to investigate.
“Kibet had been invited to an event with Senator Okiya Omtata. He left home on Tuesday and dropped off his belongings at a friend’s place in Kikuyu,” Cherotich explained.
She also mentioned that after the event, Kibet took a vehicle back to his friend’s residence in Kikuyu.
“He never arrived in Kikuyu. By Tuesday at 9 PM, Kibet was not reachable by phone. We wanted him to confirm if our other brother had come back home,” she added, noting that they still cannot reach Kibet on the phone.
The family indicates that Kibet had been avoiding the city out of concern that he might be detained for criticizing President William Ruto and his administration.
The family reported Kiplangat’s disappearance at a police station and received an OB.
The cartoonist is a student at Egerton University in Nakuru and is recognized for posting silhouette images featuring characters resembling President Ruto. He has also shared images depicting other leaders from the executive and judiciary.
Kibet’s situation follows a series of abductions involving social media users that have occurred recently.
